Job Description
We are looking for a Space Debris Engineer to join the ESA Space Debris Office at ESOC, providing high-level engineering expertise across debris mitigation, collision risk assessment, space situational awareness, and re-entry analysis. In this role, you will contribute directly to ESA’s Space Safety Programme, supporting operational activities, mission compliance verification, re-entry forecasting campaigns, and the continued evolution of ESA’s debris-related tools and databases.
The key activities supported by this service are:
- Support mission customers for the compliance verification analysis task;
- Contribute to mission milestone reviews for compliance aspects w.r.t. mitigation guidelines;
- Perform, in support of missions, runs with the Debris Mitigation Facility (DMF), DRAMA, Scarab and
- Provide Training on Space Debris Office software and processes to internal and external trainees;
- Contributions to the further development of the Consolidated Astrodynamics Platform, Debris Mitigation Facility, and applications based on them;
- Support of the operational Conjunction assessment screenings for ESA and third party missions including special operations phases and preparations thereof;
- Support of Launch and Early Orbit Phases (LEOPs) for conjunction assessments including preparation of procedures and toolchain before launch;
- Contributions to the evolution and upgrade of the collision risk assessment and avoidance manoeuvre planning toolchain and related auxiliary tool;
- Contribute to the evolution and update of the Consolidated Astrodynamics Platform and DISCOS database;
- Support the ESA’s re-entry forecasting process, especially for re-entry observation and prediction;
- Campaigns
- Participate in international conferences and public outreach activities related to space debris;
- Provide technical expertise for media interviews on space debris topics.
Essential qualifications and experience:
- University degree in Astronomy, Mathematics, Engineering, or Physics;
- Strong problem-solving skills in mathematical and dynamical applications;
- Experience in developing and operating software for technical solutions (Linux scripting, Fortran, C++, Python);
- Excellent communication and presentation skills;
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written;
- Ability to coordinate and interact with multiple stakeholders, including ESA and external partners;
- Ability to work independently while effectively communicating within a larger team;
- Experience in space debris standardization activities, particularly data exchange standards;
- Proven experience in assessing compliance with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Other desirable qualifications and experience:
- Familiarity with ESOC operations and Space Debris Office tasks;
- Experience working with external partners and stakeholders;
- Proficiency in Linux, network services, protocols, and system administration;
- Strong multi-tasking capabilities, handling multiple missions simultaneously.
