Unlocking the Power of Machine Learning in Earth Observation

04 July 2023

Solenix brought the ML4EO Course at EUMETSAT on 23-25 May 2023.

After successfully hosting the course in both 2021 and 2022, our colleagues, Sara Aparício, an Earth Observation Data Scientist, and Itziar Alonso, a Senior Remote Sensing Engineer, organised the third edition of the ML4EO course at our customer EUMETSAT's premises from 23rd to 25th May.

This course serves as an introduction to machine learning, covering its fundamental principles and illustrating its practical applications in the field of earth observation.

Sara and Itziar prepared theoretical materials to introduce the key concepts of machine learning. Complementing the theoretical aspects, they developed numerous hands-on notebooks, exercises, and datasets using EO data, ensuring a practical learning experience. Additionally, they carefully curated a selection of commonly used tools for performing machine learning tasks.

The course proves particularly valuable for EUMETSAT data users, as it offers a comprehensive and structured overview of machine learning, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Students gain firsthand knowledge and understanding of how to apply machine learning techniques to address their specific problems.

EUMETSAT has consistently expressed their high appreciation for the course, starting from its inaugural edition. Since then, Sara and Itziar have diligently worked to enhance the course content, incorporating practical examples that align with EUMETSAT's data, infrastructure, and meteorological-related challenges.

The students have expressed great satisfaction with the course materials, acknowledging the accuracy of knowledge shared and the excellent mentorship provided by our two colleagues.

Overall, the course has been an exceptional experience, and we eagerly anticipate the fourth edition!
